Debt is Bad

In 1974, then Elder Ezra Taft Benson gave a talk on being prepared titled Prepare Ye. In that talk he said, "It is well to remember that continued government deficits cause inflation; inflation is used as an excuse for ineffective price controls; price controls lead to shortages; artificial shortages inevitably are used as an excuse to implement rationing. When will we learn these basic economic principles?" ("Prepare Ye," Ensign, Jan. 1974, p.68).

I do not believe we have learned them yet as the government prepares and debates on how best to get us further into debt. Too much debt ruins individuals, companies, and it will ruin our country. Inflation will become a problem. It is time to stand up and take responsibility for our lives and stop voting ourselves benefits that we cannot afford! It is not the governments role to pay our mortgage or buy our gas, it is ours.

We have gone too long trying to get something for nothing and now we are realizing that it cannot be done. It is not too late. It's time communities pull together and vote government out of our lives. Let us decentralize power and take control of our futures.

Well said. It is upsetting to me that such a simple principle is not understood. California and New York should be good examples to the rest of us of the burdens that Social programs create for their people. California whom is bankrupt, and unable to give back their residents the money the people overpaid in taxes, should be a warning to all. Taking from one person to give to another person is enslaving one person on behalf of another. If people have money, they ought to have the option whether to be charitable or not. If they don't have money, they ought to have the option to get money from the sweat of their own brow. Didn't our forefathers fight for independence from Great Britain for much less of a tax?
